Whatever happens to the Health Secretary, it would be a mistake if the essence of his reforms is lost. The NHS desperately needs change along the lines Mr Lansley has proposed: most important, there must be more competition between those who provide medical services, and greater choice for those who use them. There is clear evidence from other countries that competition in the provision of medical services drives up standards of care. There is also powerful evidence from the UK to that effect: a study by the London School of Economics, among others, has shown that competition improves the quality of hospital management. Tony Blair?s Labour administration introduced, and encouraged, treatment centres provided by the private sector for simple procedures such as hernia operations: these have duly produced better results than their ?in-house? NHS equivalents. They have also dramatically reduced waiting times for patients.
