How dare Barack Obama spring the trap that conservatives idiotically set for ourselves!?!
And true, it's most unsporting for the President to embarrass "paranoid nuts" for behaving like paranoid nuts. He should coddle them, the way the Republican hierarchy does, patting their pumpkin heads.
True story:
Yesterday there was a Tea Party coot standing in line at Duane Reade with his portable radio blaring. (His radio was stickered with Tea Party slogans, lest you think I'm engaging in assumptive political profiling.)
His speaker was piping out that day's installment of the Michael Savage show.
Now if he had been a young black man playing full-blare rap in a checkout line and James Lileks happened to be standing behind him, Lileks would have gotten 2,000 words out of it--what it says about our coarsening society--Gerard Van der Leun would have cited it as the greatest piece of eloquence since some psalm or another, and Instapundit would have given it an 'instalanche.
But it was just some old guy inflicting Michael Savage on us.
But what Michael Savage was saying was this: That the whole 'birther' thing was a dead end for conservatives, a losing issue, there were so many better things to go after with Obama, and he was going to take this controversy and roll it back over them and crush 'em with it.
And a day later, out came the steamroller.
There's something very awry when Michael Savage is the voice of reason.
