The YouGov survey for NO to AV Yes to PR group found that only 29 per cent of people thought AV would make MPs work harder, compared with 41 per cent who thought it would not and another 30 per cent who did not know. Mr Clegg was granted the referendum on AV as part of the Coalition deal with David Cameron.
The Deputy Prime Minister this week used an article in The Daily Telegraph to argue that the expenses scandal had illustrated that change was needed at Westminster and that AV would help bring about that change for the better.
But in today?s poll 59 per cent said they believed AV would not have helped avoid the expenses scandal, while only 13 per cent thought that it would have done.
And 55 per cent felt AV would not ?shut the door? on extremist parties like the BNP.
Mr Clegg will today make a plea to ?progressive? Labour voters. He will say that he would ?rather side with progressives in all parties than the old establishment?, apparently referring to the Tories.
In a speech to an AV rally in Norwich, Mr Clegg will urge Labour supporters to follow Ed Miliband, their leader, and vote for ?a real, progressive change to our democracy?.
?There are those in the Labour Party who oppose AV. They are trying to block progress,? he will say.
?The John Prescotts, David Blunketts, John Reids and Michael Martins are in the bizarre situation of fighting a campaign that gets the vast majority of its funding from big Tory donors they have always criticised.
?Labour No campaigners are the means to conservative ends. Look at the company they are keeping. The only political parties supporting the status quo are the Conservative Party, the Communist Party and the BNP.
?I would rather side with progressives in all parties than the old establishment and the lunatic fringe.?
