Just when we are running out of criminally expensive heating oil, we are told that, to satisfy Chris Huhne's deranged obsession with global warming, we must all pay much, much more for electricity. Even if you believe that the climate is changed by human activity (and I remain unconvinced), our hair shirt will achieve nothing at all, except to make us all poorer, since the Chinese will continue to belch out carbon with absolute abandon. In violation of market forces, electricity prices will be guaranteed to encourage low-carbon schemes. I hope businesses will invest in cheap, high-carbon ones instead, just to allow us to remain competitive, and solvent. If we think we can depend on wind and wave power, we are insane.
