Judges deny media access to extradition evidence

Legal action was also intended to strengthen right of the media to obtain evidence used in criminal trials

Two high court judges have dismissed a move to open up contentious extradition hearings to greater public scrutiny. The Guardian and the Times began legal action this month to strengthen the right of the media to obtain copies of evidence used in extradition hearings and at criminal trials in general. But today Lord Justice Sullivan and Mr Justice Silber ruled it was settled law that the principle of open justice in criminal proceedings "did not extend to the right for the public or ... the press, to inspect documents or other exhibits placed [in] the court". The Guardian is to appeal against the decision.
