Andrew Lansley's NHS scheme misses a trick

This is childish. There has been co-payment ever since prescription charges were introduced in 1952. And, in recent years, hospitals have used car parking and telephone charges quite cynically to boost their incomes. Most people's experience of the NHS is pretty good ? but it could be even better. Sadly, Mr Lansley, like every other frontline politician, knows only too well that if he even hinted at opening the way towards using insurance schemes to bolster health spending, the forces of hell would be unleashed. Until our politicians show greater maturity, any reform of the NHS will inevitably be
an unsatisfactory halfway house.
