The Veidt Stuff

Here at headquarters we are huge admirers of actor Conrad Veidt, that dashing dagger of elegance and danger best known as Major Strasser in Casablanca, a role that didn't reveal the full range of his charm and charisma. He was, after all, one of Balanchine's favorite actors and Balanchine knew everything. TCM's classic film blog Movie Morlocks features an extensive critical-biographical tribute, Conrad Veidt: "I Am a Wanderer", that will make you want to put on a long black leather and swank out into the winter day, treating the slush-puddles as insignificant nuisances, as Veidt would done, instead of whining on every corner. Be sure to read to the very end, to Christopher Isherwood's eyewitness account of Veidt in character on the set of Jew Suss.
