US, Mideast Mediators Criticize Israel

The United States and other Mideast peace mediators are criticizing Israel for new settlement building plans.

The quartet of mediators said in a statement Tuesday that recent Israeli approval for housing in the West Bank "underscores the urgent need for the parties to resume serious and substantive talks." The U.S., European Union, Russia and United Nations comprise the quartet.

The mediators chided Israel for "unilateral action" while mediators are trying to get both parties back to the negotiating table.

It said Israeli and Palestinian leaders must make tough decisions and avoid actions "that undermine the very goals they and we are trying to achieve."
