Rick Perry Leading GOP Pack in Latest Poll

ABC News? Arlette Saenz (@arlettesaenz) reports: After just one week on the campaign trail, Rick Perry jumped to the front of the Republican pack in a new Gallup poll released today, ahead of frontrunner Mitt Romney by 12 percent.

Of 1,040 polled Republicans and Republican-leaning independents, 29 percent said they would likely support Perry as their party?s nominee, while only 17 percent said they?d pick Romney.

This is a change from July?s Gallup poll which indicated Romney was in the lead with 23 percent of Republicans? support while Perry, who was undeclared at the time, garnered 18 percent in the poll.

The poll released today was conducted between August 17 and August 21, just days after the Texas governor made his candidacy official, the results of the Ames Iowa Straw Poll were announced, and Tim Pawlenty dropped out of the race.

Trailing behind Perry and Romney in the August Gallup Poll are Ron Paul (13%), who jumped ahead of Michele Bachmann (10%), Herman Cain (4%), Newt Gingrich (4%), Rick Santorum (3%), and Jon Hunstman (1%).

If you throw potential candidates Sarah Palin and Rudy Giuliani into the mix, Perry and Romney remain on top with 25 percent and 14 percent, respectively. Palin ties Paul with 11 percent of supporters, followed by Giuliani at 9 percent and Bachmann at 7 percent.

Perry?s emergence as the leader in the Gallup Poll after only days of campaigning shows the potential vulnerability of Romney?s ?frontrunner? status, and the Texas governor?s entrance into the 2012 race also seemed to overshadow Bachmann?s straw poll win in Ames, as the Minnesota congresswoman did not receive any boost in the August Gallup poll.

The Texas governor officially entered the race Aug. 13 in Charleston, South Carolina, after months of consideration. In the first eight days of campaigning, he barreled through three key early states ? Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina ? and ended the tour in Texas, holding a total of 23 events over the course of the week.

Romney is the only chance at winning. NO WAY moderates will vote for Perry.

Seems the no waves Romney isn't working...

When the price of oil comes down and the stimulus money is all spent the "Texas miracle" will be revealed for what it is and Perry will lose support. He may have the nomination by then.

A Perry / Palin ticket wouldn't that be sweet!

Personally, I think it?s ironic that Romney and Perry have the same attitude toward each other as their respective churches have towards each other:

Evangelicals: scream loudly and often, ??Mormons? are the anti-Christ!?
Latter-day Saints: Evangelicals have a lot to offer. Let?s work together as Christians to bring about positive change in the world.

Perry: scream loudly and often, ?Romney is the anti-Christ!?
Romney: ?Perry?s a nice guy. I look forward to having him on my team.?

That having been said, I agree 100% with WHOOPS. Perry can rally the deep South in an attempt to unseat Obama, but Romney can actually reach across the divide and get moderates to vote for him. Which is the smarter nomination: someone who can carry a few swing states, or a puppet for people who would vote against Obama, no matter who?s running?

There is no way the US will ever elect some crazy evangelical. I know republicans turned off by this.

He will flame out, as will the other far right wingers. Americans don't elect the far right wingers.

If a majority of Republicans aren't visionary enough to see the big picture and put electability before popularity, they need not bother complaining for weeks on end if they end up losing a presidential election which they have a good chance at winning provided they do not marginalize and push out the moderate/centrist voices within their party by pandering to the far right.

Texas is trying to boost the state's average IQ by exporting all their village idiots.

Rick Perry is just another Bush: conniving, greedy and wholly without scruples.

At least the Republican's finally wised up and put Paul ahead of Bachmann. He should be at the top of this list. Paul and Bernie Sanders are the most logical politicians (two words that don't often collide in the same sentence) in Washington. They disagree on ideology, but both have common sense, workable solutions to solve our country?s issues. It's just a matter of personal choice in deciding whose ideology you believe in the most.

Perry will be the next President. He's already tied with BO, and BO has nowhere to go but down.

Best President Special Interests and Lobbyists for big companies can buy...can we say puppet?

Along with Simmons ? who won permission to build a low-level radioactive waste disposal site in Texas, a project that promises to generate hundreds of millions of dollars ? The Times found dozens of examples in which major donors to Perry have benefited during his tenure.

Auto magnate B.J. "Red" McCombs, who contributed nearly $400,000 to the governor, is the primary financial backer for a Formula One racetrack to be built near Austin. The state has pledged $25 million a year in subsidies to support the project.

The Houston-based engineering firm of James Dannenbaum, who gave more than $320,000 to Perry, received multiple transportation contracts from the state. In 2007, Perry appointed Dannenbaum to a coveted post on the University of Texas' board of regents.

A Mississippi-based poultry company run by Joe Sanderson, who gave $165,000 to Perry, received a $500,000 grant from a state business incentive fund championed by Perry to open a chicken hatchery and processing plant in Waco.

WEAPONX | AUG 24, 2011 5:35:27 PM POSTED: ?It's just a matter of personal choice in deciding whose ideology you believe in the most.?

So you are OK with Ron Paul?s position on Evolution? He believes in creationism. Seriously, that?s ?logical??

According to Ron Paul, ?The ONLY thing that changes the nature of our life is our understanding about what personal liberty is and restraining the government.?

Here?s where Libertarians like Ron Paul are at the end of a thin branch:

No matter what social and economic system is put in place, some % of kids will be neglected, some people will have horrible accidents or diseases, some people will be born on the low end of the IQ scale, many will grow old and feeble, and this leads some Americans into poverty.

For Libertarians, there is no calculation for how much suffering is a worthy trade for all the extra ?freedom? they would experience by ?restraining? Government social programs like education, food stamps, or Medicare.

Those are two of Ron Paul?s ideologies ? as well as the majority of the GOP carnival running for President - that a broad swath of Middle Class voters reject.

A debate with no teleprompters allowed and you will hear from 57 states and corpsmen,no way can Oboma hold his own with SOON to be President Perry.

I been reading and hearing everyone complaining about the President and his policies plus the way he has handle the economy. Now, I want you to close your eyes and imaging you woke up the next day and there were a change and there was President McCain and Vice-President Palin. Plus an all Republican Senate and House. Tell me how much better would your world be now? Please Convince the Democrat we made a mistake.

Tell me how the new President and Vice would handle the economy, war and jobs. Keep in mind that the Republicans policies would all be used.?

How do we know Obama is smart? He won't release his records. He doesn't impress me at all. What makes him so smart? What on his record makes him a genius? He's done NOTHING. He got ushered through to the next level. Hence, our Affirmative Action President.

Posted by: BK.70 | Aug 24, 2011 6:31:38 PM

Maemobly, besides who said anyhting about smarts? I said he would lose. BO is a one-termer. He's in it for the retirement.

Posted by: BK.70 | Aug 24, 2011 6:40:45 PM

Another Loser for the State of Texas, if he get elected that will be more minimum wage jobs without health care. Just like the idot Bush.

Posted by: Thomas | Aug 24, 2011 6:45:14 PM

Yes - Perry all the way. When the multiple affairs come out things will get interesting. As long as Herman Cain - The King from A Soldier's Story is disgraced all is well. It is realy starting to look like the Republicans are deliberately throwing the 2012 election. Obama/Clinton 2012 Biden to Secretary of State.
