Where could he be?
There is speculation that hundreds of miles of tunnels underneath the capital link the former Libyan leader?s compound to several of his other properties and key points across the city. They are even said to stretch into the Sahara desert.
Some have suggested those tunnels can be used to access the Rixos hotel, where 35 non-Libyans, including around a dozen Britons, are being held hostage. This raises the spectre that Gaddafi could use them as a human shield.
However, could have fled to Sirte, his home town, or any of the few remaining loyalists' strongholds. Gaddafi could also have fled the country and there are suggestions that he could take refuge in South Africa or Venezuela.
Who will take control?
The National Transitional Council (NTC), which has formed from opposition groups and defectors, has are expected in the capital today. A temporary government is expected to be formed within days. Members of the NTC?s cabinet are due in France tomorrow for a meeting to examine ways to rebuild the country and establish democracy.
What is the UK?s involvement?
Civilian experts from Britain are poised to head for the Libyan capital to help stabilise the government, in an attempt to avoid the chaos that followed military victories in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Although unconfirmed, British agents are understood to be assisting rebels in mopping up the last of the Gaddafi loyalists.
The UK is also likely to offer assistance in establishing a viable police force, such as has been done in Iraq.
What will be the role of Nato in the next few days?
Strikes continued today against targets in Libya and Nato has said its aircraft will continue to provide observation in the hunt of Gaddafi.
Nato warships will be patrolling the Mediterranean coast for weeks, partly to protect aid coming in by sea.
What will happen to Gaddafi''s assets?
Hundreds of billions of dollars have been frozen in accounts linked to the former dictator. If the NTC is recognised as a legitimate government, those could be thawed and vital funds restored for the reconstruction of the country. Such a move would be likely to appeal to China and Russia, making their assistance more likely.
Who will maintain order?
The UK will not be putting soldiers in place and neither will Nato as it is beyond the UN mandate. The NTC has plans for a Tripoli Task Force of up to 15,000 personnel to prevent looting and revenge attacks.
