Obama Pens Editorial: Makes the Case for 'Big' Debt Deal

ABC News? Mary Bruce (@marykbruce) reports:

The president is continuing his push for a ?grand bargain? to reduce the deficit through spending cuts and revenue increases, writing in a USA Today editorial that ?we have the opportunity to do something big and meaningful.?

?People in both parties have suggested that the best way to take on our deficit is with a more balanced approach. Yes, we should make serious spending cuts. But we should also ask the wealthiest individuals and biggest corporations to pay their fair share through fundamental tax reform,? Obama writes. ?A balanced deficit deal that includes some new revenues isn't just a Democratic position. It's a position that has been taken by everyone from Warren Buffett to Bill O'Reilly.?

Once again, Obama makes clear that he?s been willing to make tough decisions to raise the debt ceiling and reduce the nation?s $14.3 trillion deficit.

?I'm willing to cut historic amounts of spending in order to reduce our long-term deficits. I'm willing to cut spending on domestic programs to the lowest level in half a century. I'm willing to cut defense spending by hundreds of billions of dollars. I'm willing to take on the rising costs of health care programs like Medicare and Medicaid, so we can meet our obligations to an aging population,? he writes.

But the president warns, ?If we tackle our deficit with spending cuts alone, it will likely end up costing seniors and middle-class families a great deal.?

With less than two weeks to avert default, Obama says the debate shouldn?t just revolve around avoiding the ?catastrophe of not paying our bills.?

?That's the least we should do. This debate offers the chance to put our economy on stronger footing, restore a sense of fairness in our country, and secure a better future for our children. I want to seize that opportunity, and ask Americans of both parties and no party to join me in that effort,? he writes.

A reminder: It's Congress' mandate to legislate; it's the Administration's mandate to either validate or veto legislation presented to it. Those who keep repeating ad nauseum that President Obama hasn't "laid out a plan" to raise the debt ceiling while at the same time tackling the national debt are choosing to blame the President for not doing what Congress is responsible for doing. Bull feathers! The problems with Congress are: (1) they're more concerned about pandering to the sources of next campaign support than attending to the needs of the entire United States; and (2)Congress isn't competent to police itself. The issue of term limits should be on the ballot. The President is limited to 2 4-year terms; members of Congress should also be limited in the number of terms they may serve. The manner in which Cogress has been comporting itself on these import issues is self-serving, not public service.

I learned Michelle you support a bill you know almost nothing about. You don't know what programs will be cut, and you don't know how or by how much.

From the same CNN poll:

64 percent say they favor a blend of spending cuts and tax increases. Those who favor only spending cuts: 34 percent.

Obama appears to be winning the battle when it comes to who appears responsible.

About 52 percent say he has acted responsibly (an 8 percentage-point increase since May 1) while 46 percent say he has not (a 3 percentage-point decrease). That?s an 11 percentage-point shift in the president?s favor.

Meanwhile, Congress? isn?t viewed so well, with 33 percent saying it acted responsibly while 63 percent saying it hasn?t.

If the debt ceiling isn?t raised, Republicans (who control only the House) would get a majority of the blame, with 51 percent saying it?s the fault of the GOP and 30 percent saying it?s Obama?s.

Phil the Republican legislation Cut, Cap and Balance wasn't even surveyed in the CNN poll. So quit trying to pretend it was.

General theories like cutting spending, raising taxes, balanced budget legislation and so on were polled.

ALL of those approaches received strong support.

And Democrats recieved more support than Republicans and so did compromise.

You've done your job well tonight. You have not accomplished a single thing. Your time would be better spent reading through the specifics of the grand bargain plan issued by oBama and then reading the specifics of the latest budget put out by the DEMOCRAT Senate. Trust me, it won't take long.
.
What is the next screen name on your list?

Paul, if your not going to read the Legislation for yourself don't ask me to do it for you. CCB received 63% of support among Democrats. The Balanced Budget received 74%. Paul you may end up supporting it yourself, read away, nothing like a little education.

You don't want to know and you don't really care. Just like your grand bargain "leader" you want someone else to go first so you can tear down anything they say. That's all the lefties can do... they have no budget plan... they have no specifics.... their only tactic to make it through the next election is to just destroy the opposition because your "plan" can't survive the light of day.... wouldn't want anyone actually reading it and debating its merits.

By the way Phil, you're lying again. The survey does NOT show the public supporting the Republican's Cut, Cap and Balance Bill.

The survey shows people support things like cuts in spending, tax increases, balance budget ammendments and some caps on spending.

They also favor the Democrats over the Republicans and they favor compromise.

The House passed a bill that attracted bipartisan support. The fact that you chose not to read it makes perfect sense because that is not your purpose on this blog, now is it.... oBama and the DEMOCRAT Senate have yet to offer anything other than the usual talk... no plan... just talk, and talk, and talk.

News flash: CNN poll 60% plus support Cut Cap and Balance. This is going to happen.
It is time for the President to eat his PEAS.

Just as we thought... no specifics in oBama's speech. Can't find anything? Only thing left to do is demonize the other side. That is the real "grand bargain" plan, isn't it....

Hilliarious.....Bots still don't know that even if you taxed all the rich people like Obama says he wants (which is meaningless because he lies all the time, and he has protected ubber rich friends from MCD's, GM, GE, etc)it wouldn't cover his spending. Wake up and smell the coffee already---Obama just doesn't want his credit cards paid for by taxpayers chopped up. No more spending, no further in debt OBama, No more class warfare, no more lies from you...YOU should be in prison next to Bernie madoff already.

There is only one Grand Bargain, it is Cut, Cap, and Balance. It is the only Proposal that actually deals with the problem. Face it the Democrats haven't actually put a plan on paper. Once again it's the Republicans doing the heavy lifting.

The debt ceiling was raised 9 times while the Republican Bush administration was in power.

Where were all the livid right wingers then? Setting a good example?

Posted by: Paul | Jul 21, 2011 10:36:39 PM

If the President is willing to make real cuts, he needs to lay his cards on the table. However, we know it's smoke and mirrors. Tax us more now, promise cuts later that never materialize by playing accounting games. The SPENDING is the problem!

Posted by: chad3337 | Jul 21, 2011 10:35:18 PM

Ah yes...more Alinksy-isms! Don't address the issue...attack anyone who disagrees with Obama negatively as an "evil tea partier."

Once again...no plan from Obama. He provides Lip Service to grandiose notions but provides no plan. This is not leadership.

If the negotiations about ALL OF OUR MONEY (for those of use who are citizens) were broadcast on C-SPAN (as promised) then the negotiations would be transparent. The negotiations are not and so conflicting news stories abound, and many don't believe an Obama op-ed. Obama has no one to blame but himself.

The political game Obama played was to take everything to this point with an expectation that Congress would cave in to the Executive Branch pressure and to give him Trillions more to "play" with. It didn't happen and Obama has no one to blame but himself.

Unfortunately for America he was elected to govern America for the benefit of all and not just his donors and their failed economic plans.

Michelle Shu: Maybe Obama is talking above your head in that you don't specify what your concern is (other than his speech is written). BTW, I'd bet you can't define "liberal". If not, words you can't define should be avoided. I'm sure you have no concise definition because Limbaugh and Hannity haven't included a definition in any of their rhetoric. It's just juvenile name calling.

How you people, you ignorant tea partiers or whoever you are, can sit there and parrot 'right wing SOUNDBITES' saying the person who calmly and coldly 'took out the Somali Pirates and Bin laden' and say ..."he doesn't have a plan"...is beyond me. LOL...LOL...LOL... What 'fantasy land or dream world' do you people live in? And if you are a middle class person(s) saying these things...you are 'biting the hand' that is trying to protect and help you towards a better future. But you are either just too dumb or ideologically blind to see that...aren't you?

Oliver, you are right on target. Why Obama seeks to limit discussion to right wing alternatives should be the major topic of discussion.

Warren Buffett, however, wasn't too thrilled about the repeated demonization of those "coporate jet owners."

What the heck is "everyone from Warren Buffett to Bill O'Reilly" supposed to mean anyway? Not just the classic appeal-to-authority logical fallacy but those two rich white guys hardly represent the "extremes" of American opinion.
