Senate Scuttles Boehner Bill: Now What?

 Previous | Main | Next

ABC News' Jon Karl reports:

The game of "Debt Default Chicken" continues. The House and the Senate are now preparing to make meaningless ?statement? votes ? each side proving to the other that their debt-ceiling bills can?t pass.

Here?s the plan:

The Senate is now voting ? and will vote down ? the Boehner debt ceiling bill that just passed the House (In fact, the Senate voted 59-41 to table the bill). Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.,will then move to begin debate on his bill, but --

At 1 p.m.Saturday, the House of Representatives will have a vote on that Reid debt ceiling bill. The Republican-controlled House, of course, will vote this down.

Of course, none of this means much. The real question is when the two sides will negotiate a compromise that can actually pass.

Those negotiations have quietly begun. It?s hard to see how they can have a deal passed and signed by Aug. 2 if they have not agreed to a compromise deal by midnight Saturday.

If they do have a deal by then ? they could have a final Senate vote by Monday morning, setting up House vote late Monday, averting the economic catastrophe they have all been predicting would result from inaction.

The house needs to kill Reid's bill the very second it arrives.

How about what us taxpayers want, not what REID WANTS! Oh that's right the democrats don't CARE ABOUT US.

This getting beyond ridiculous.

Unbelievable --they say the Republicans are the party of NO--I think the Democrats and Obama now own that title!!!

jesus christ guys.

what do you want? the reid bill and the boehner bill are virtually identical - reid's cuts more than twice as much, and extends the debt ceiling twice as long.

And we could easily get a trillion dollars more by simplifying the tax code.

Sheesh. Like everyone else, I'm sick as hell of this. When you read about massive stupidity causing strife and civil war in history (the religious wars of the 16th century come to mind with the reformation, the counter-reformation and the inquisition) it's all so safe and cozy in the past; living through it YOURSELF is not so fun.

I feel I've done everything right and have a good lifestyle as a result, but I'm tied to these blithering *idiots* who think that posturing, and polemics is their job, and not administration.

Get something done, guys and make it balanced. We are not guaranteed an answer here, and if we don't get one, lord help us all.

Let's start a campaign to "Pray away the Democrat Crazy".

So apparently the Senate is not serious about the debt ceiling. One can only conclude that this was a manufactured crisis designed to stir up donors going into the campaign season.

Tell us what the taxpayers want Ann.

Reid is a wise man who can actually show the Repulicans and brainless tea party members how things should be done. Remember, in the Bible it says Obama has been sent to save US ALL from destruction.
Thank God and Obama for their guidance in this worls full of stupid elected officials who would be able to pass the 8th Grade Constitution Test!

And yet we all pay for their stubbornness. The ones who really hurt are the Seniors and the Vetearns who live off those checks a month.

Leave it up to the democrats to want to take more money from us.

What a d@#%* MESS!!

It has all become so tiresome and tedious to listen to the 'debate' over
our debt ceiling and possible default.
The smug and arrogant 535 Congressmen
and women will raise the U.S. debt limit
at the 11th hour, but at what cost my
fellow Americans? At what cost indeed?
Good luck, America.

Democrats have this one right...no more free passes for the wealthy and Big Oil. Stick to you guns and tell Boehner to take a hike and stop messing with SS and Medicare. I don't see Big Oil and Big Business creating any new jobs since the tax hikes took affect on Bush's watch. This excuse that they will stop creating jobs if hikes are in place is getting old. Excuse me, these are not tax hikes on the middle class American folks, it a repeal of the tax credits, read between the lines.

I say we vote 'em all out of office and start over...

Typical Dems. No budget. No plan. Now they will put forward a 2,000 page bill hours before the expiration date and expect the R's to sign it. NO WAY - NOT THIS TIME. NOT AGAIN.

99.999% of politicians are one notch below child molesters. Senator Bernie Sanders is one of those good guys but not many left. Most of them have sold their souls to the darkside. Both parties are nothing more than SATAN lackies in Brooks Brother suits.

No matter how the media tries to spin this, more and more American's are waking up to the fact that the liberals are trying to destroy this country. We made our voices clear last November and we will do it again next year. American is not a socialist country and NEVER will be!

Why is Schumer smiling? Does this make him happy?!?!
