Unions threaten fuel strike ahead of Royal wedding

Any industrial action would take a further four to five weeks to organise, meaning strikes would be likely to begin in early to mid April.

An industry source said: "If this goes ahead, parts of the country will grind to a halt very, very quickly. If they begin balloting at the beginning of March that takes us into Easter and the run-up to the wedding."

But a Unite spokesman said last night there was no intention to disrupt the wedding. "I can categorically say any strike will not coincide with the wedding. We are working hard to try to avoid a strike," said the spokesman.

The spokesman would not be drawn on when a strike might take place.
