As economists like to say, there's no such thing as a free lunch. Policymakers had no choice but to respond to the financial panic and the Great Recession with the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP), a massive fiscal stimulus and easy money. If they hadn't, the economy would be in a much worse place today and the cost to taxpayers even greater. But it has cost us big time, as the nation's budget deficit and debt load are out of control.
