Obama's 2011 Resolution: Recovery

 Previous | Main | Next

January 01, 2011 6:00 AM

From Sunlen Miller:

President Obama?s New Year?s resolution is to grow the economy and create jobs, he declares in his weekly address, the first of the new year.

?Our most important task now is to keep that recovery going. As president, that?s my commitment to you: To do everything I can to make sure our economy is growing, creating jobs, and strengthening our middle class. That?s my resolution for the coming year.?

As the president winds down his vacation, he previews the year that lies ahead, facing a different political reality than when he rang in the new year last year.

?In a few days, a new Congress will form, with one house controlled by Democrats, and one house controlled by Republicans -- who now have a shared responsibility to move this country forward. And here?s what I want you to know: I?m willing to work with anyone of either party who?s got a good idea and the commitment to see it through.?

The president says he expects Americans to hold both parties accountable for ?our progress or our failure? to deliver on those commitments.

?We have come through a difficult decade, one of new threats and new trials we didn?t expect when it began. But a new year and a new decade stretch out before us. And if we just remember what America is capable of, and live up to that legacy, then I?m confident that we are poised for a period of progress.?

The president will return to Washington on Monday, after a two-week vacation in Hawaii.

skip ----- said "the Democrats were nowhere near foolish enough to try a maneuver which would have been so easily portrayed as not supporting the troops." ---- Exactly!!! ---- They had the control to change the things they wanted to... but not guts to do it!! ---- They DID have congressional control.... yet supporters moronically blame the Bush for everything!! --- Thanks for agreeing!!!!

"the Dems are as much, or more, responsible for the state of our economy than the GOP!!!!"

And the GOP would desperately like everybody to believe it was so, but despite the monumental efforts the right-wing smear machine has made to divert this well deserved blame no poll has ever shown that a majority of the public blames the Democrats for causing the financial crisis.

"The Dems held the "purse-strings of this nation since Jan 2007!! --- They could have "de-funded" the war they said they didn't want"

But unfortunately for the Republicans the Democrats were nowhere near foolish enough to try a maneuver which would have been so easily portrayed as not supporting the troops.

The "Ditty Heads" are still regurgitating the double standard laced distortions from their trusted radio talk show hosts. You can tell they can't think for themselves because their language is always word-for-word quotations. They hated Obama before he ever took office and now try to pretend it has something to do with his performance. Anybody over 40 has seen this act before. The "kids" think they're on to something new and original. One day they'll mature and learn how badly their ignorance was exploited.

"Instead, he concentrated on his AGENDA of big government taking over health care!!!"

And there it is again folks: Politifact's "Lie of the Year" repeated yet again, starting off a new year with old right-wing propaganda. The healthcare plan is not a government takeover, it expands coverage using private insurance.

Posted by: Skip | Jan 1, 2011 5:32:30 PM

Great. One problem. A government can not produce jobs. Unless it's a stimulus for massive projects or adding to government.

Raven ---- You said "it is disengenuous to argue that the Democrats were "in control" from 2007 onwards, as many do, when they were extremely limited in their ability to set policy" ---- Don't be coy!! --- The Dems held the "purse-strings of this nation since Jan 2007!! --- They could have "de-funded" the war they said they didn't want (and hense Obama has expanded it)! --- They could have "de-funded" the Patriot Act they said they didn't like (and since Obama has extended it for himself)! ---- Don't cry "no power".... the Dems are as much, or more, responsible for the state of our economy than the GOP!!!!

Posted by: TheLoyalOpposition | Jan 1, 2011 3:31:17 PM

Its really too bad Obama didn't concentrate on jobs and the economy LAST YEAR and in 2009!!! ----- Instead, he concentrated on his AGENDA of big government taking over health care!!! ---- I hope everyone remembers this when 2012 comes along!! ---- We should have been coming out of this recession much quicker than we are!!!

Q: How do you starve a Democrat?

A: Hide his food stamps under his work boots.

Posted by: Fascist Hyena | Jan 1, 2011 3:08:44 PM

I like pie.

Posted by: Zipper | Jan 1, 2011 3:05:10 PM

MEAB, I misspoke and accept the correction. (FTR, I am NOT a Democrat. I am an Independent). What I meant to say, and did so very sloppily, is that Bush, while overall having one of the lowest number of vetoes (in fact, he set a 200 yr. record for NOT using the veto in March of 2006, having gone that long w/o ever doing so) but once the Democrats took over Congress (2007) he proceded to exercise his veto powers with a passion...all but one of his 12 vetoes came AFTER the Dems took Congress. Regardless, my point is that it is disengenuous to argue that the Democrats were "in control" from 2007 onwards, as many do, when they were extremely limited in their ability to set policy due to both Presidential veto power AND their slim majority.

Posted by: Raven | Jan 1, 2011 2:52:51 PM

And I will add that exacerbating the problem is exactly what the current crop of Republicans WANT to accomplish..their stated primary objective is to obstruct and, as one of them put it, "make Obama a one-term President." Yep. Not job creation, not helping the millions who are on the verge of losing everything through no fault of their own, not even paying off the debt (which was not considered a problem when THEY were in the White House and building it to record levels)...making sure Obama FAILS, even if that means the NATION fails, so they can run in 2012 and blame him for a still bad or worse economy. Oh, and making sure the top 3% continue to get their treasury draining tax cuts. Killing two birds with one stone on that one. If the American people are STUPID enough to fall for this tactic, they deserve whatever they get.

Posted by: Raven | Jan 1, 2011 2:36:32 PM

Raven,

You made that part about Bush's "record number of vetoes" up. Made it up is a charitable way of saying that you lied. G.W. Bush had a total of 12 vetoes, of which 4 were overridden by Congress. A total of 12 vetoes in 8 years. How does this compare with past Democratic Presidents? Clinton had 37 vetoes, Carter 31, LBJ 30, Kennedy 21, Truman 250, and how about FDR? Franklin had 635. Record number of vetoes??? This is why American's can no longer trust Democrats - when they have no real argument Democrats just make stuff up.

Posted by: MEAB | Jan 1, 2011 2:27:21 PM

The fact is, after 8 yrs of Republican rule (the 2 yrs in which Democrats controlled Congress saw a record number of VETOS from Bush...our national policy remained firmly in the hands of the Right) we were losing 700,000 jobs a MONTH. Currently, we are GAINING roughly 100,000 or so a month...still not enough, but the trend has been reversed. The "trickle down" economics of the Republicans DOESN'T WORK..it simply redistributes the national wealth UPWARDS; the rich grow ever richer and everyone else grows ever poorer (the top 5% now control 60% of ALL wealth, the highest imbalance EVER). The last Depression came on the heels of extended Republican rule and recovery came under a Democrat ..the same policies tend to create the same results, people..learn from history or be doomed to repeat it (as we are). If Obama had NOT done what he has, we would currently be in another Great Depression instead of a Great Recession. Going BACK to the policies that CAUSED the problems will not fix them..it will exacerbate them.

right wingers, we have not forgotten your failed economic policies that pushed this economy off the cliff. please stop repackaging and selling your failed, no growth, stagnant middle class income reagnomics aka supply side aka vodoo economics aka sean hannity/rush limbaugh tax cuts for the rich

"Now we know what redistribution means"

Right-wingers have no idea what redistribution really means, they use it as just another political bogeyman even though they're apparently perfectly happy to let Republicans set government policy to constantly redistribute wealth to Americans who already have by far the most of it. In actuality wealth is redistributed in many different economic conditions. A common example is inflation which typically redistributes wealth from creditors to debtors. But I realize all that wouldn't fit on a bumpersticker.

Posted by: Skip | Jan 1, 2011 1:28:31 PM

As a wise man once said "when President Obama's socialist policies fail the American people succeed". Lets hope that the President has learned a lesson and will reverse direction!

Posted by: Voice_Reason | Jan 1, 2011 1:27:21 PM

"But it will be a long road back before we enjoy the 4.7% unemployment rates we had when Republicans ran the show"

This must be another lame attempt to abrogate Republican responsibility for the financial crash and the 700,000 jobs a month we were losing before Bush left office.

Posted by: Skip | Jan 1, 2011 1:07:06 PM

As unfortunate as it is, there are those "Americans" commited to Obama failing. The people that place party over country are destroying said country. Imagine... a party that wishes, hopes, and conspires against the elected President of the United States. Disagreeing with policy is one thing, Sabotaging efforts to bring this country out of crisis should be treated as nothing less then treason.

"Perhaps, just perhaps with a Republican House we can do that once again"

Even if so it won't likely be because of the Republican House, Republicans creating jobs is largely a right-wing myth. Republicans like to ship jobs overseas.

Posted by: Skip | Jan 1, 2011 1:02:24 PM

When Obama took office he inherited enormous problems that obviously he hadn't created. Since then, he's been scoffed at and sabotaged at every step by people who want nothing more than to see him fail. I don't think he's perfect but you can't pretend that those people haven't been making it difficult for him, that he hasn't chalked up a long list of positive accomplishments in spite of it all, and that he hasn't been restrained and level-headed at a time when the polarization of our nation has been so exploited by FOX News that half of Americans surveyed are found to have been completely misinformed or simply unaware of many political truths that surround us and greatly affect our lives. To be honest I resent the heavily funded public relations war being waged against Obama more than any decision he's personally made so far. The President has my support.

Actually. $5 a gallon gas prices are what's going to kill whatever recovery anyone's experiencing.

Predictable rhetoric from the campaigner-in-chief.

Gone would be a better resolution for this clown.

Posted by: MBA | Jan 1, 2011 11:04:18 AM

young_voter, I'd prefer a President Palin at this point. Obama's energy policies coupled with the negative consequences of the Federal Reserve's recent quantitative easing, are driving gasoline prices through the roof.

His economis policies are bankrupting us, his recovery plans have kept millions on the unemployment line and record numbers of Americans (43 million in November) are now receiving food stamps to get by.

We cannot withstand this Cloward-Piven designed attack on our government for much longer. Hopefully, the new House will slow down this public looting and pillaging until it can be stopped in 2012.

Yes, I'd like to see what someone like Palin, with an energy and executive background, could do in the White House to help America get out of this mess. Even if that knucklehead Levi gets another 15 minutes of fame.

Gee after four years of Democrat control of Congress and two years of complete control of the government, the result has been millions of jobs lost due to these redistributionists. And once again they pledge to create jobs? Perhaps, just perhaps with a Republican House we can do that once again. But it will be a long road back before we enjoy the 4.7% unemployment rates we had when Republicans ran the show.

Meanwhile layoffs continue. Now in the financial sector as the Dodd-Frank financial bill signed by this job killing President takes it toll on the working families of our country.

Now we know what redistribution means. People lose their jobs and their income and get unemployment in return. What a great deal.

Posted by: RDH | Jan 1, 2011 11:00:36 AM

President Obama and Congress have no idea how to fix the economy in the long term. We have structural problems that place increasing strains on economic resources including an unsustainable level of unemployment. Our young people graduate from high school (and even college) without the necessary skills to be competitive in today's globally-interconnected, technology-oriented world where scientific ingenuity and new product development is lacking in the U.S. What happened to American innovation? What was the last great invention by our entrepreneurs -- the IPad? Too many young people look to take the easy way out. The work ethic that made this country great no longer exists. The government does not provide the training, direction, leadership or join together with big business to start dealing with these problems. We are well on our way to become the world's second largest economy -- after China.

Obama was supposed to be different. The press tells us he's a great speaker. Two millions goes to his rally. The press tells us that he's supposed to be smart, but when you watch him live at press conferences and interviews, he doesn't seem smart at all or even a great speaker. But he seem to be better than Mrs. Palin and Levi Johnston.

Posted by: young_voter | Jan 1, 2011 10:10:55 AM

The president says he expects Americans to hold both parties accountable for ?our progress or our failure? to deliver on those commitments.

Really? Funny how we have been chastised for holding the Democrats responsible for so many wrongheaded decisions when they held BOTH the House and Senate. Now, with Republicans ruling one side, we are required to hold BOTH parties accountable. Okay class, can you say "double standard"?

Looks like 2011 is just going to be a lopsided extension of the past two years. Business as usual for Obama.

Posted by: Shoe | Jan 1, 2011 10:03:17 AM

Obama's a backstabber. I don't trust him and won't vote for him in 2012.
