So Many Sad Goodbyes

Last night I read Sigrid Nunez's upcoming memoir about Susan Sontag in a single sitting, and melancholy is the only word to describe the mood it traces in the air and leaves behind. Then today comes the news that after 20 years of publication the literary magazine Open City is closing. (Ironically, or coincidentally, the magazine's final issue includes a story by Sigrid Nunez.) I read it from the beginning, even went to one of its early parties (oh those were the loft days), and am sad to see it adios, recognizing how hard it is to keep anything literary going in this parlous environment. It's not a complete shutdown--Open City Books will continue--but what a loss.
