Ed Miliband: Coalition is returning to the 1980s politics of division

Mr Miliband continued his attack on the Coalition over falling standards of living. ?With the decisions they are making on VAT, tax credits, they don?t seem to understand the struggle that ordinary families are facing,? he said.

Labour officials said Mr Miliband will deliver a similar message to the London march today, which is expected to be the largest and most controversial demonstration against spending cuts to date.

Michael Fallon, the Conservative deputy chairman, said Mr Miliband was making a ?major error of judgment? by speaking to the union march.

?Ed Miliband can?t attend a 'march for an alternative? rally when he?s done nothing to set out an alternative. If he and the unions that elected him oppose the cuts, they need to set out a credible alternative. Doing nothing is not an option,? he said.

Mr Fallon said the Coalition had a credible plan to ?put the public finances back on track?. ?Labour are abandoning the centre ground, retreating into their comfort zone of Left-wing protest and cosying up to the unions,? he said.
