Cult of Equities Is Dead, Long Live Them

Jeremy Warner, Daily Telegraph
It's one of those articles both of faith and experience that, over time, equities always outperform government bonds and cash. It's more risky to invest in the economy's wealth-creating capacity, but if you do it for long enough, you'll invariably end up better off than by lending to governments or sticking your money in the bank. The trouble is that though the rule applies over long time frames, it is by no means true for shorter periods, as many discovered to their cost in the aftermath of the dot.com bubble and more recently the banking crisis.
