Does Britain?s voting system need changing? And, if so, is the chosen reform, known as the Alternative Vote (AV), a sensible replacement for First Past The Post? It would be unwise to argue that the electoral system can never be improved, especially when traditional political loyalties are breaking down and society has become far more pluralist than it once was. But while the current system is not perfect, and led to an indecisive result last May, it has tended to produce strong and accountable government. It is also simple to understand. AV, by contrast, will make the prospect of future coalitions greater, with all the instability that entails, and ensure the adoption, through backroom deals, of policies for which most people did not vote.
