"Lord and Lady Attenborough were very supportive of the community bid, but they weren?t happy with what became a tortuous and fraught process,? one source close to the couple said.
?The trouble is that the process was hampered by some pretty badly put-together legislation.?
A Scottish Executive assessor originally valued the estate at 1.4 million, 200,000 less than the Marquess of Bute?s offer, but a deal was later struck for about 1.48 million.
An Executive spokesman said the legislation allows landowners to appeal if they are unhappy with the valuation of their properties, but Lord Attenborough did not do so.
?Ministers are currently considering the claim from Sir Richard and Lady Attenborough, and at present cannot comment on it,? he added.
